The Pyrenees
In the past thirty years the Pyrenees have been rediscovered and is everyday increasing in popularity and becoming an alternative to the well-known Alps.
Stretching from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, the Pyrenees form a natural some 450km long between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Continental Europe.
In some cases villages to the north and south of the Pyrenees share common language and culture, while there is rivalry between valleys on the same side of the mountains The Pyrenees gentle slopes are the perfect place to enjoy ski mountaineering and cross-country skiing for the first time. Compared with the Alps, the avalanche risk is lesser, and the chance of falling into a crevasse is minimal. There is no better way of getting real solitude than ski-traversing in the Pyrenees in winter.
One of the greatest pleasures of walking in the Pyrenees is the chance to sample a variety of French and Spanish food. Pyrenees cuisine is generally simple, delicious and very filling, preparing people for the strenuous mountain lifestyle. In general there is a tendency towards the traditional dishes and strong, tasty recipes, based on the meat and milk or vegetable products of each region.
The quality of the Pyrenees wines varies greatly, from the table wines of Irrouleguy in the Basque Country to the sweet aperitif wine produced in Banyuls on the Mediterranean Coast. There should be something here to satisfy everybody. |
